The invention of laser dates back to 1960.Hair removal lasers were approved by FDA in 1997.
Laser hair reduction [LHR] works on the principle of selective photothermolysis. Melanin in hair selectively absorbs laser light. This light is converted into heat energy which in turn damages the hair roots. Since the amount melanin present in the skin is way less, it remains unaffected.
There would be a significant reduction of total hair. However, some fine hair may remain giving a natural look.
Women with hormonal problems seek laser more often for facial hair. But LHR can be done for different body parts like upper and lower limbs, chest and back.
Underarms and bikini laser are already well known and popular amongst youngsters.
Men seek laser for coarse and excess hair, ingrown hair and hair on ear lobule.
Laser hair reduction is also done in areas of recurrent boils/ pilonidal sinus/ keratosis pilaris.
Multiple sittings ( 6 to 8 on an average) are required spaced once in 4 to 6 weeks. Women with hormonal imbalance may require more number of sessions.
It’s a very safe procedure. Redness on treated area is temporary. Superficial burns are extremely rare and temporary.
The laser is better avoided in individuals with certain autoimmune diseases, active epilepsy or active herpes.
